THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
In 1989 while directing the Drama Department at Elyria High School, J. R. was looking for a smash play to produce in Spring 1990. His students wanted to perform The Phantom of the Opera. Musicals were not the forte of the EHS Drama Department (those were produced by the Music Department) and both John Kenley's and Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptations were not available for amateur production. So, J. R. set out to find a suitable non-musical adaptation.

No existing adaptation was to his liking. So, J. R. read Gaston Leroux's novel. Finding that the English translation was published in 1911, J. R. realized that the English translation of the novel had fallen into the public domain. J. R. quickly adapted the novel and in February 1990, the EHS Drama Department premiered a new adaptation of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera.

Perusal copies of J. R.'s Phantom can be ordered directly from J. R. at jovialities@excite.com. Performance rights can be requested in the same manner.  Look for Phantom to be released in both digital and print formats through Smashwords and Lulu by the end of 2011!
